How is Diabetes Diagnosed? Diagnostic Criteria:
There are three possible ways of diagnosing diabetes. Any one of them must be confirmed, on a subsequent day, by any of the three ways:

  • A fasting blood glucose/sugar equal to or above 126 mg/dL;
  • A random blood glucose/sugar equal to or over 200mg/dL with symptoms;
  • A 3-5 hour oral glucose tolerance (OGTT) test in which the 2-hour blood glucose is equal to or greater than 200 mg/dL. This test is not recommended for routine clinical use.

Definitions:

  • Normal blood glucose/sugar = 70-110 mg/dL.
  • A fasting blood sugar is measured at least 8 hours after the last meal.
  • A random blood sugar is defined as any time of day without considering time since last meal.
  • An OGGT is done in the following way:
    1. measure the fasting blood glucose
    2. drink 75 grams of anhydrous glucose dissolved in water (provided by lab or physician)
    3. measure the blood sugar –, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours after drinking the solution


Pre-Diabetes Conditions:
Individuals who do not meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes, but whose blood sugar is not completely normal.

  • Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) = blood glucose levels between 110-125 mg/dL;
  • Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) = normal fasting levels (less than 110 mg/dL) and 2-hour post meal between 140-200mg/dL.
