1. MODY (maturity - onset diabetes of the young) Characteristics:
- Mild high blood glucose/sugar
- Generally occur before the age of 25
Cause:
- Genetic defect of the beta cells of the pancreas resulting in not enough insulin secretion by the pancreas
Treatment:
- Diet
- Exercise
- Self Blood Glucose Monitoring
- Education
2. Extensive injury to the pancreas such as:
- Pancreatitis
- Trauma
- Infection
- Pancreatectomy (removal of the pancreas)
- Cancer of the pancreas
- Hemochromatosis
- Cystic fibrosis
Treatment begins with:
- Diet
- Exercise
- Self Blood Glucose Monitoring
- Education
