1. MODY (maturity - onset diabetes of the young) Characteristics:

  • Mild high blood glucose/sugar
  • Generally occur before the age of 25

Cause:

  • Genetic defect of the beta cells of the pancreas resulting in not enough insulin secretion by the pancreas

Treatment:

  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Self Blood Glucose Monitoring
  • Education

2. Extensive injury to the pancreas such as:

  • Pancreatitis
  • Trauma
  • Infection
  • Pancreatectomy (removal of the pancreas)
  • Cancer of the pancreas
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Cystic fibrosis

Treatment begins with:

  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Self Blood Glucose Monitoring
  • Education

If not successful proceed with:

  • Oral medication
  • Insulin
